About the Journal

Nordisk barnehageforskning (Nordic Early Childhood Educational Research) publishes original articles of high scientific quality that further develop and encourage the ongoing discourse on preschools and preschool teacher education in the Nordic countries. NBF is an arena for preschool-related research in the Nordic countries with a broad thematic and methodological orientation. The journal is heightening awareness of Norwegian preschool research by connecting it to larger networks in the Nordic countries and the broader international context.

Publication Process

Nordisk barnehageforskning is an online, Open Access journal, freely available to all interested readers. Publishing occurs on a continual basis, subsequent to effective, transparent and professional peer review procedures. NBF contributes with responsible subject editors and reviewers who provide constructive, thorough and balanced assessments. To ensure scientific quality, NBF utlizes single-blind peer review: the author(s)’s identity is known to the reviewers, but the reviewers’ identities are withheld from the author(s) for the duration of the review phase. Accepted articles include, when published, the names of the reviewers that recommended them. Conversely, reviewers who at any point withdrew from the peer-review process or recommended rejection are not named in the published article. To acknowledge the responsible editor’s contribution, his/her name also appears in the published article.

Language

Nordisk barnehageforskning promotes the use and development of the Scandinavian languages in research and also publishes articles in English. All editorial communication at the journal is in Norwegian. For articles to be published in one of the Scandinavian languages, a one-page synopsis in English is required; likewise, a one-page synopsis in a Scandinavian language is required for English-language articles. All article manuscripts must include a brief abstract and five keywords in English.

Management

Nordisk barnehageforskning was established in 2008 with the initiative of Ingrid Pramling Samuelsson and Professor Emeritus Jan Erik Johansson, and the journal was published under the auspices of Oslo Metropolitan University until 2019. Since its establishment, NBF has had over 60,000 article downloads annually.

During 2021–2023 the journal is operating with resources from KINDknow – Kindergarten Knowledge Centre for Systemic Research on Diversity and Sustainable Futures at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences and FILIORUM – Centre for Research in Early Childhood Educaion and Care at the University of Stavanger. Publishing NBF is in keeping with these two centres’ objectives and vision for communicating and disseminating quality preschool research stemming from a range of disciplines and methodological approaches nationally and internationally. The annual Norwegian preschool research conferences hosted by the centres are important forums for information exchange and dialogue that the journal also serves to promote. Oslo Metropolitan University continues to contribute to NBF’s operation with professional editorial support.
